From Lisa, Camper Parent:
I really wasn’t sure if camp was the right thing for my daughter and boy I’m glad I gave it a chance. She loved it and really wants to go again next year. I’m sure I’ll still be hearing about her friends, counselors, and activities for many months to come.
From Mark & Kim, Camper Parents:
Every time our son has come back from camp I feel he has learned a tremendous amount. The nice part is he doesn’t even realize he is learning. I feel he is mentally ready for any challenges when he gets back home.
From Michelle & Andy, Camper Parents:
This being our son's first year at camp, I was thrilled with the way this camp was run. I felt safe leaving him! It was a great experience for him to see so many kids his age with the same issues he faces daily!!!
From Sam & Tammy, Camper Parents:
This was our daughter’s first experience away from home, and she loved it. She had such a good time at camp; she didn’t even write us a letter. And for that and the education she received, we are extremely pleased.
From Anthony, Camper Father:
When asked how to improve the camping experience:
A longer program, it [the program] truly bonds the children and forms lifelong friendships.
From Michelle, Camper Mother:
This is the best experience my son has had relating to his diabetes. He realized there are a lot of kids just like him. He gained the confidence he needed to start being responsible for his diabetes.
From Peggy:
Dear Setebaid Services:
I'd like to tell you that my son did not want to go to camp. I told him that
he had to go to camp one time in his life (for diabetes, as he was a Boy Scout
and had been camping before). This would allow both of us to know that no matter
what happens in life, he could handle his diabetes. I refused to yield to his
pleas to not have to go to diabetes camp. I am so glad that I insisted and he
went to camp.
He had a wonderful time at Camp Setebaid. The ultimate testimony had
to be when he told another friend with diabetes, "yes, my Mom made me go the
Camp Setebaid. It was fun. Don't think you'll learn anything there about diabetes,
it was just a lot of fun with a lot of activities." He wants to go again!
He DID LEARN about diabetes while at camp…. The best part is that he
didn't know he was learning. I'm not sure if you understand what I'm trying
to say…except that a 14 years-old teen did learn and he didn't feel like he
was being taught. I'm very impressed with your philosophy of using "teachable
moments".
My son came home a more mature young man. He now takes responsibility for his
diabetes. He doesn't need to be reminded to check his blood sugar or to count
carbohydrates. He's better at counting his carbohydrates now than I am. And,
he doesn't argue with me over meals or checking his blood sugar!
I just wanted to thank you. I also want to thank all of the members of your
organization, as well as the generous donors who help to make the programs possible.
You've been there when we needed you!
Sincerely,
Peggy

From Jeff & Jeannie:
Dear Mr. Moyer:
We just wanted to say, "Thank you" from the bottom of our hearts. The Diabetes
Family Retreat was everything we wished for - revealing, educational, and inspiring.
As a family, we walked away knowing that we can achieve a normal, less rigid
lifestyle and that the continuous monitoring system can lend insight into nighttime
worries. We will put these two discoveries into practice almost immediately.
After Saturday afternoon's programs, we contemplated whether our two-years-old
daughter was too young and if we should have waited one year to enroll. After
our new-found knowledge was digested, we realized that this retreat was the
best thing we have done since she was diagnosed over twelve months ago. We realized
that we could not envision waiting one more year to learn about insulin pumps.
And, by the time we left the retreat, she was giving herself pretend shots.
We must admit that we were hesitant to leave our two-years-old daughter with
strangers on Saturday (even though she is a very out-going child). However,
by Saturday evening we were completely at ease. Your staff consists of mature,
wonderful and unique adults. We are convinced that your staff are truly caring
individuals.
I sometimes place unrealistic expectations on performance, but your staffing
for this event, by far, surpassed my hopes.
In truth, we envy your job…because behind all of the schedule shifting, room
re-arranging, credit card discrepancies, etc., you are able to help people realize
that they are not alone, that their children can lead normal lives, and that
they are better parents for attending the retreat.
We look forward to next year's retreat. We look forward to being better parents
because of our new insights into "the interactions within families with diabetes".
Again, thank you for being so organized, caring, and helpful. We will treasure
this experience for a lifetime.
Best regards,
Jeff & Jeannie
